What is GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)?
Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of making your site easy for AI assistants — ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot — to find, read, and cite when they answer people’s questions. Where classic SEO works to rank your page in a list of blue links, GEO works to get your site named in the answer itself.
The shift matters because more and more people now ask an assistant instead of searching. When someone asks ChatGPT “what’s a good privacy-friendly analytics tool?”, they usually read the answer and act on it — they rarely scroll a results page. If your site is the one the assistant cites, you are in the conversation. If it isn’t, you are invisible, no matter how well you rank on a traditional search engine.
GEO and SEO are not the same thing
They overlap, but they optimise for different readers and different outcomes.
| SEO | GEO | |
|---|---|---|
| Reader | A search engine indexing pages for a ranked list | An AI assistant composing a single answer |
| Goal | Rank high in the results | Be cited in the answer |
| Win condition | A click from the results page | A mention, a citation, and ideally a click-through |
| Surface | The search results page | The assistant’s reply, sometimes with linked sources |
A site that is great at SEO is not automatically great at GEO. Assistants read your pages differently from a search crawler — they care about clear structure, machine-readable content, and whether they can trust and verify what they find. A page can rank well and still be passed over by an assistant because it is hard to parse or slow to load.
Why GEO matters for your business
- AI is becoming a discovery channel. People find products and answers through assistants now, not only through search. That traffic shows up in Voris as the AI traffic channel — real people who arrived from an assistant.
- Citations build trust. When an assistant names your brand as a source, that is a third-party endorsement in front of someone actively asking a question you can answer.
- It compounds. Content that assistants find clear and trustworthy keeps getting cited, long after you publish it.
How Voris helps you with GEO
Voris is built around AI visibility, so the whole loop is measurable in your dashboard:
- The AI Citations tab tracks which assistants cite your brand, for which questions, and how your share of those citations compares with competitors.
- The AI Visibility tab shows AI agents crawling your site and visitors arriving from AI — the two halves of how AI interacts with you.
- The Agent Readiness check grades how well your site is set up for assistants to read and trust. See Improving your Agent Readiness score to act on it.
If any of this is new, a good order to read is: this article first, then How AI assistants find and cite your site for the mechanics, then the score guide to put it into practice.
